7 Warning Signs That May Point to Diabetes or High Blood Sugar

In type 1 diabetes, the body does not make enough insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the body may still make insulin, but it does not use it effectively. Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

When glucose remains too high for too long, it can affect blood vessels, nerves, eyes, kidneys, heart health, wound healing, and energy levels.

1. Frequent Urination

One of the most common warning signs of high blood sugar is urinating more often than usual. This may be especially noticeable at night.

When blood sugar rises, the kidneys try to remove extra glucose from the blood. That extra glucose pulls more fluid into the urine, which can increase both the amount and frequency of urination.
